TEACHING
MISSION
Catarina in her words:
"My work as a teacher expands from the need to share the knowledge I have acquired throughout years of living in Lisbon, New York, and London, where I was fortunate to belong to both the music scene of these multicultural cities, and to develop my skills as a practitioner, thinker, creator of music, and a teacher. The voice as an instrument is endless in expressive possibilities, and the more your work is versatile, the more your voice needs to be.
My experience with Jazz, Latin and Brazilian Jazz, as well as the traditional music from Brazil, Cape Verde, Angola, and Portugal, make me fully aware of the existing connections between timbres, melodies, rhythms. My studies in Sound and Composition (Goldsmiths University, London, UK) deepened my knowledge about sound production, and Electronic music.
In my teaching I focus on vocal technique, ear training, improvisation, songwriting, rhythm skills, and also electronica applied to the voice as instrument. I am also a truly believer that you have to be able to express a unique sound, your own voice, where your voice as an instrument, and your creative skills, are connected. Teaching individual lessons or group lessons (using the concept of circle singing, among others), the core focus is that you become aware of your unique sound, you are able to use it with ease and flexibility, and you are prolific musically."
Catarina is currently the Jazz Singing teacher at the brand new Professional Degree in Jazz at the Lisbon's National Conservatory, and Theory and Ear Training teacher at EMARTE. In Portugal, she taught at Escola de Música Fábrica do Braço de Prata, Escola de Jazz do Barreiro, Academia de Jazz Os Franceses, World Music Program at ESTAL University. She taught at The Harbor Conservatory for the Performing Arts, Young Audiences New York, Third Street Music School, and at Teachers College, all located in New York City. She also lectured at Rutgers University, Pittsburgh, and participated in many educational projects, such as Juan Usera y La Tribo (Afro Puerto-Rican music), Maracatu NY, Corpos Percussivos (Recife, Brazil), and mentored the residency "O nosso lugar é o mundo", at CEA, sponsored by Câmara Municipal da Moita and the European Community.
